This square or garden has had various names over the centuries, including Terreiro do Paço dos Condes da Ribeira Grande, as it was located next to the now-disappeared palace, which is today occupied by the Palácio Fonte Bela. There was also the Church of São Mateus in this square, which was situated on the eastern side.
