In the heart of the city of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, the old church of the Jesuit College stands out for its imposing façade, decorated in volcanic stone, based on the baroque style.
Inside, it is impossible to ignore the sculptural exuberance of the main chapel's carvings, allied to the tile panels that complete it, reminiscent of the splendour that marked the time before the banishment of the Jesuits, ordered by the Marquis de Pombal in 1760. In 2006, the collection of Sacred Art of the Carlos Machado Museum was integrated in this unusual heritage complex. Thus, at the beginning of the 21st century, this single aisle church became a place of cultural enjoyment, with a constant vocation dedicated to knowledge and teaching.
